Physical therapy is a conservative, non-invasive and effective way of treating numerous injuries without surgery. Musculoskeletal conditions such as neck and low back pain, sciatica, whiplash, shoulder, knee, and hip pain are common injuries which can get better with physical therapy. Restoring muscle and joint function can eliminate low and mid back pain.
Physical therapy concentrates on muscles and joints that are in pain to make them stronger.
What you can expect to do in physical therapy:
Light aerobic training
- brief exercise to get heart rate up on a stationary bike or treadmill
Strengthening exercises
- free weights and resistance bands focus on specific muscles and joints
Stretching
- light stretching to facilitate muscle strengthening
Electrical Stimulation
- contraction of muscles using electric impulses with a very low current (no shock)
- used in combination with ice
- stimulate production of endorphins-- natural painkillers
